    Description

    William Lewis Safire (December 17, 1929 – September 27, 2009) was an American author, columnist, journalist, and former speechwriter for President Nixon.  He joined The New York Times in 1973 as a syndicated political columnist and was winner of the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary, He is the author of numerous books, including political novels, and his other titles include a dictionary, a history, anthologies, languages, and commentaries. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2006. Safire died from pancreatic cancer at a hospice in Rockville, Maryland, on September 27, 2009, aged 79.
    The light-green New York Times postcard, 4½"x6", on one side bears the wording "On Language" printed in black on top left, while his full name is printed at the bottom of the card.
    The actual message in the body of the card is inscribed in very fine black ink, using a fountain pen, in his own handwriting: "Dear Mr Rxxxe -- /Thanks for your interest --/Best/William Safire" .
    The facing side of the postcard, bearing the full address of the New York Times office in Washington, DC, is addressed to the recipient with the full name and address written in William Safire's same own handwriting.
    The postcard, with duly affixed postal stamps, is postmarked 17APR1981, Washington DC.
