Robert Anderson Van Wyck - 1849-1918 Served as the first mayor of New York City after the consolidation of five boroughs into the City of Greater New York in 1898 to 1901. He directed construction of the Interborough Rapid Transit, the first subway in Manhattan and provided for the construction of the proposed Brooklyn Tunnel. One of seven children, served as a Confederate Regimental Surgeon.
