    Description

Original 1990 NY Governor MARIO CUOMO Autographed/Signed Official Letter to retired Schenectady Gazette employee of 42 years, Orazio "Buddy" Ottaviano.
razio "Buddy" Ottaviano, a longtime Gazette editor described as hard-nosed and principled, died Friday. (1998)
Ottaviano, who was 72, began working at the newspaper while a student at Union College.
He worked at the Schenectady Gazette for 42 years, 25 of them as city editor.
He retired as managing editor in 1990, soon after the newspaper moved into a new plant on Maxon Road and added its Sunday edition.
He died at his home on Avenue B after a long illness.
Ottaviano was chatty and a great story teller. A lifelong Schenectady resident, Ottaviano had a thorough knowledge of local history, politics and government.
Ottaviano was an avid golfer, and as a young man enjoyed fly fishing, skiing and hiking in the Adirondacks. He liked listening to live music in area clubs, and in 1977, he was awarded an honorary gold card by the local musicians union.
Ottaviano was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School and Union College. During World War II, he served with the Army.
In his senior year at Union, where he was news editor of its student newspaper, Ottaviano became a part-time copy editor at the Gazette.
He kept working at the Gazette after graduation in 1948, and became city editor in 1955. He was promoted to assistant managing editor in 1979, and managing editor in 1985.
Survivors included his wife, a sister, two brothers and four stepchildren.
