    , a Democrat, was
    Governor of Michigan (1949-1961)
    and a
    Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court
    (1971-1986), serving as
    Chief Justice
    the last three years. His grandfather, Gerhard Heinrich Mennen, was the founder of the Mennen brand of men's personal care products, which is how Williams acquired the popular nickname "Soapy".
