Joseph Chamberlain (1836 - 1914)
was a British radical politician and ardent imperialist, businessman and social reformer who opposed home rule for Ireland and served as a leading imperialist in coalition with the Conservatives.  He split both major British parties in the course of his career.  He also got involved in South African affairs and was accused of complicity in the Jameson Raid, an abortive invasion of the Boer republic of Transvaal by British settlers from the neighboring Cape Colony on December 1895.
