    JOHN C. FRÉMONT.
    Partly Printed DS: "
    J.C. Frémont
    " on verso, 1p, 7½x4½.
    Philadelphia, 1868 March 2.
Bond No. 33, issued by the "
Southern Trans-Continental Railroad./Texas Division-From Jefferson to El Paso
    ." Construction Series 'A.' 14th Section of 20 Miles.
    In part:
    "
    The
Memphis, El Paso and Pacific Railroad Company
    Hereby acknowledges itself
indebted to John C. Fremont, in the sum of One Thousand Dollars
, payable on the surrender hereof,
by the transfer of Fifty Acres of Agricultural Land, to his order

upon any of the Eight Million Acres donated by the State of Texas to the Company
, and open to entry, or at the holder's option, by One of the Thousand Dollar Bonds that may be granted to the Company by the United States in aid of the construction of its Rail Road from Jefferson to El Paso, and issued on account of the Section above designated....
    "
    Also signed
by two members of the railroad's Executive Committee. After
the Civil War, the Texas legislature granted Frémont land in the interest of the Memphis and El Paso Railway, which was to be part of a proposed transcontinental road from Norfolk to San Diego and San Francisco. The note offered here, when endorsed by Frémont (as it is here on verso)
    ,
gave him 00 for 50 acres of that land.
In the spring of 1845, when war with Mexico appeared imminent, John C. Frémont (1813-1890) was sent on an expedition to California, his third, with secret orders instructing him to convert his party into a military force should he find that war had begun when he arrived. When news of war reached California in July 1846,
Frémont was appointed Major of the California Battalion
composed of his own men and U.S. volunteers. On August 13, 1846, combined forces under
Frémont and Commodore Robert F. Stockton captured Los Angeles
. In Frémont's absence, the town was retaken by Mexican forces, but Frémont returned in time to join General Stephen W. Kearny in its final capture in January. On January 13, 1847,
Frémont accepted the Mexican surrender at Cahuenga
    . Stockton appointed him
    Military Governor of California
, but Frémont became involved in a dispute between Kearny and Stockton and he was
arrested by Kearny, his army superior, for mutiny, disobedience and conduct prejudicial to military order
    . He was
    found guilty
of the last two charges by a
    courtmartial
    in 1848. Although
    President Polk suspended his sentence
, Frémont resigned from the army. Before serving briefly in the Civil War, Frémont became
one of California's first two U.S. Senators
    (1850-1851) and was the
Republican Party's first presidential nominee in 1856, losing to Buchanan
. During the Civil War, Frémont was appointed
    Major General
    by President Lincoln and
    briefly commanded the Western Department
. He was removed from his post when he decided independently to emancipate all of Missouri's slaves (August 1861), but remained in the army until 1864.
After the war, Frémont would lose the fortune he had made during the California gold rush due to bad investments in railroads.
    He returned to politics as
    Governor of the Arizona Territory
    (1873-1883). Slightly creased. Fine condition.
