GERALD P. NYE - AUTOGRAPHED SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH - HFSID 34675
GERALD P. NYE
Signed photo at his desk (3x4½ image with broad margins)
Photograph signed:
"Gerald P. Nye"
, B/w, 5x7 overall, image 3x4½ one surface. Gerald Prentice Nye (1892-1971), a journalist and newspaper editor, represented North Dakota in the US Senate for two decades (1925-1945).
A progressive Republican, Nye supported most of President Roosevelt's New Deal legislation, but broke sharply with the President on foreign policy.
In
1934
, Nye chaired a special Senate committee (universally known as the
Nye Committee
), investigating profiteering in the munitions industry. Nye
drew national headlines with testimony suggesting that the US had been manipulated into entering World War I by arms manufacturers and by bankers
anxious to protect their investments in Britain and France. With isolationist sentiment on the rise, Nye
sponsored the Neutrality Acts of 1935 and 1937
, designed to avoid US entanglement in a future European war by curbing arms sales and loans to belligerents. Nye was also a
founder of the America First Committee, which opposed FDR's Lend Lease and draft legislation
. Nye voted reluctantly for the US Declaration of War after Pearl Harbor, but believed Roosevelt had manipulated events so as to cause war. Nye's views were no longer in step with public opinion, and he was defeated for re-election in 1945. Paperclip crease at upper margin just left of center. Adhesive residue (previous mounting) at corners. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
