*********************************************Chicago Mayor Anton J Cermak 1873 - 1933
Collector Memorial Plate
Mayor Cermak was severely wounded in Miami while shaking hands with then-President-Elect Franklin Delano Roosevelt on February 15, 1933 and died March 6. The killer Giuseppe Zangara, it was theorized, was attempting to assassinate Roosevelt but shot Cermak instead. The quote from Cermak "I'm glad it was me instead of you" which is also engraved on his tomb, supposedly was uttered while he was in the hospital but some historians doubt it was ever said. Four others were shot in the event and one woman died. Walter Winchell offered the theory that Cermak, not Roosevelt, was the intended target all along due to Cermak's promise to clean up Chicago's corruption due to Al Capone but others refute that. Cermak had opposed Roosevelt's nomination for President and was in Miami to mend fences with the President-elect.
Has been displayed and image has faded as shown. Made by the Edwin M Knowles Co, USA. 9.5" diameter with hanger ( I will leave intact)
