1932 John Nance Garner Typed Letter Signed

John Nance Garner (1868-1967) typed and signed this letter in 1932 while he was serving as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives
(1931-1933) and was only a few months from beginning his role as Vice President (1933-1941) under Franklin D. Roosevelt. In the letter, Garner writes to Mr. Royal J. Algie of Ogdensburg, NY, and thanks him for a “Monogram”, saying that “It was, indeed, a pleasure to receive a gift of this nature from one who voted for Samuel J. Tilden.”
John Nance Garner began his lengthy political career as a county judge in Uvalde County, Texas. He went on to serve in the Texas House of Representatives (1899-1903), was elected to represent Texas in the United States House of Representatives (1903-1933), and was both House Minority Leader (1929-1931) and Speaker of the House during his time there. Garner is one of only two people who have served as both Speaker of the House and Vice President, the other being Schuyler Colfax.
Typed on a sheet of imprinted stationery from “The Speaker’s Rooms House of Representatives” that measures: 10 ½” x 7 ½”.
Condition:
Fold lines, two holes punched along the top edge and two straight pin holes (both result of record keeping storage), lightly toned, overall in good condition with a large, bold signature.
