1916 Hand-Signed Letter to Mrs. Merle-smith From Robert E. Speer, Presbyterian Church Missions Board. This unique letter has a letterhead from the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the USA. The letter is dated July 18, 1916, and was sent by Robert E. Speer. This two-page letter is in very good condition. It was folded to send through the mail, so has several creases. And there are a couple of small chips or tears in the left-hand edges, and bumped corners as well. But this does not detract from the letter. Rare and historical, "1916 Hand-Signed Letter to Mrs. Merle-smith From Robert E. Speer, Presbyterian Church Missions Board."
This unique letter has a  letterhead from the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the USA.  The letter is dated July 18, 1916, and was sent by Robert E. Speer.
This two-page letter is in very good condition.  It was folded to send through the mail, so has several creases.   And there are a couple of small chips or tears in the left-hand edges, and bumped corners as well.  But this does not detract from the letter.

In the letter Mr. Speer  writes to let her know about some plans the Board is putting into place. Naturally he thanks her for the service which she has rendered in the past, and to express hope that she will continue to help with the work of the council in the months and years ahead.   He then goes on to explain their plan, which generally has to do with raising a lot of money.
Mr. Van S. Merle-Smith married Kate Grosvenor Fowler o
n June 20, 1916, just 28 days before this letter from Robert E. Speer was send.  And Mr. Speer closes his letter by stating, "May I add my congratulations to the many which will have come to you and Mr. Merle-Smith."
Mr. and Mrs Van S. Merle-Smith were very high placed in New York society in the early to mid-20th Century, and active in volunteer work.
